This advanced course will help you gain a working knowledge of the complexities of hard-to-treat eating disorders so you can provide better psychological care.
The course focuses primarily on the various medical, psychiatric, and collateral problems that complicate the recovery process along with the best psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic strategies to help these patients.
In a randomised controlled study within a routine Australian public mental health service, adult patients with BPD were provided with outpatient DBT for six months with patient outcomes compared to those obtained from patients in a wait list group receiving treatment as usual.
After six months, the DBT group showed significantly greater reductions in suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury, emergency department visits, psychiatric admissions and bed days.
Method: 60 female adolescents completed the Borderline Symptoms List (BSL-23), the Family Adaptability and Cohesiveness Evaluation Scale (FACES-V), and the Invalidated Childhood Environment Scale adapted for adolescents (ICES-A) at baseline of a 20-week dialectical-behavioural therapy.
Results: Only maternal invalidation was positively correlated with severity of BPD symptoms.
